The Horsham Film Society presents the following selection of films from around the world for the 2023-2024 season! All are shown in the original version (with English subtitles for foreign language films).

 

All films are shown once a month on a Monday evening at The Capitol, Horsham, and begin at 8.00pm.

A fictional account of a year in the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who was idolised for her beauty and famous as a fashion trendsetter. When ‘Sissi’ turns 40 in 1877, she is officially deemed an old woman and fights to maintain her youthful image by lacing her corset ever tighter. As time goes on, she becomes increasingly restless in Vienna.

In the South American jungle, four men are hired to transport an urgent nitro-glycerine shipment without the equipment that would make it safe. A tense rivalry develops between the two sets of drivers on the rough, remote roads where the slightest jolt can result in death.

The film brought Clouzot international fame: It won the Golden Bear and the Palme d'Or at the 1953 Berlin Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival, respectively, enabling him to direct Les Diaboliques (1955).
